Webinar Series Provides 'On-the-Go' Education I n this day of advanced communications technologies, including electronic tablets, the Automotive Fleet & Leasing Association (AFLA) Webinar Series ofers members a bimonthly industry seminar "on the go," delivered directly to members wherever they are — at their computer desk or on a mobile device. Te professional-quality video presentations feature subject-matter experts who address important and timely feet issues. "Te webinars are another value-added educational resource where members can attend remotely while still at their desk, still available to their job or even ofsite," explained Mark Petersen, AFLA Education Committee chair. Enhancing Membership Value Te Webinar Series began in 2010 as AFLA leaders explored innovative ways to enhance membership value. "Te value of the Webinar Series is the information itself, including topics relevant to what commercial feet managers need in their daily business activities," Petersen said. "Archived online, the webinars provide a resource library readily accessible at any time." Twenty archived webinars are now available on-demand on the AFLA website under the Resources menu. Initially conducted as a live webcast, each session features a 30-45 minute presentation by an industry authority, followed by a 15-minute Q&A period. Participants in the live webinar register in advance and connect to the presentation at its scheduled time. Questions are sent via typed mes34 sage. AFLA staf member Elise Jaeger serves as moderator. Current webinar topics include legislative reviews and forecasts, fuel hedging, telematics, negligent entrustment, employee monitoring, technology and drivers, resale market trends, global feet management issues, and budgeting. Te nine-member Education Committee brainstorms topic ideas that meet member needs. AFLA's Commercial Fleet Manager Sounding Board is also consulted, and a recent membership survey netted several more. "We also take topic and speaker suggestions directly from the membership," said Petersen, who serves as senior sales executive for the remarketing frm Hourglass Management/Flexco Fleet Services. Webinar speakers are most ofen nonAFLA members. "We look for strong and interesting presenters who are experts in their feld, can speak to the feet relevance of their topic, and can hold the audience's attention," Petersen said. Six Webinars Per Year Planned Te committee plans to conduct at least six webinars per year. Should a "hot topic" arise, the bimonthly schedule allows an extra webinar presentation on the of-month, Petersen noted. Topics, speakers, and webinar timing are intentionally planned to augment, not compete with, the AFLA Conference sessions. AUTOMOTIVE FLEET & LEASING ASSOCIATION ANNUAL REVIEW 2013 The AFLA webinars feature a 30-45 minute presentation, followed by a 15-minute Q&A period. They are then archived online. Live webinar audiences range from 10 to as many as 50 participants. Typically, viewership increases as the session joins the archived webinar library. Te most heavily attended presentation was the recent "Leadership Communication for Women" webinar, arranged by Women in Fleet Management (WIFM), an AFLA-supported group. Petersen's long-term goals include improving the webinars' interactivity and visual excitement. He'd like to move to video webinars, "somewhere down the road." Te current format, however, appears to provide what feet managers want. "I look forward to all the webinars produced by AFLA," said Chuck Kukal, feet supervisor at Infnity Insurance Company in Birmingham, Ala. "Tey are on point, on target, and so helpful." ■ KUKAL
