AFLA CONFERENCE 2013 SMASHES RECORDS The 2013 conference focused on key trend trends, ocused the future of feet, and motivated attendees. BY LAUREN FLETCHER N T he 2013 Automotive Fleet & Leasing Association (AFLA) Conference was held Sept. 10-13, 2013, at the Westin Kierland Resort, in Scottsdale, Ariz. Te event smashed previous records with more than 450 attendees, more than 250 members, and 13 educational sessions. Tis year featured some special preconference events, including a Women in Fleet Management (WIFM) session on personal branding and two additional sessions on alternative-fuel vehicles and generational diversity. Te conference kicked of on September 11, with Lt. Col. (Ret.) Rob "Waldo" Waldman presenting a rousing keynote speech on never fying solo based on his experience as a combat pilot. Additional sessions covered the legislative forecast, future of vehicle engineering and maintenance, and resale marketing trends and direction. Te evening was capped of with the Automotive Fleet Hall of Fame and Professional Fleet Manager of the Year, and Fleet Financials Fleet Executive of the Year awards. Finally, Tom Callahan of Donlen passed the AFLA presidential gavel to John Dmochowsky of Mondelez. AF 34 AUTOMOTIVE FLEET I NOVEMBER 2013 Helene Lollis, president of Pathbuilders, Inc., outlined generational differences to help attendees understand and learn to work better with all coworkers. John Cruickshank, attorney, (pictured) and Richard Alaniz, senior partner, both of Alaniz & Schrader, presented a session on management liability. Tom Callahan, outgoing AFLA president and CEO of Donlen, welcomed frst-time attendees and announced the new board of directors. Lynn Morgan, VP, marketing and consulting for Manheim Auctions discussed current resale market trends and favorable inventory supply. Michael Rogers, practical futurist and best-selling author, presented a session, "Smart, Green, and Networked: The Car of the Future," on Sept. 11. Brian Barber of LeasePlan USA stepped up to the post of Executive Vice President at the conference, and will plan the 2014 conference. John Dmochowsky, sales feet manager of Mondelez, was named the president of AFLA, succeeding Tom Callahan of Donlen. Lt. Col. (Ret.) Rob "Waldo" Waldman few fghter planes for 23 years and taught attendees that "winners never fy solo."
