INDUSTRY NEWS FUEL REPORT Gasoline Prices Ebb at End of Year Gasoline prices were on a steady decline at year's end. In December, the national average hit $3.25 per gallon, 14 cents per gallon lower than one year ago. The lower prices seemingly affected demand with it rising slightly, an unusual turn of events for year's end.The continuous decline of ethanol costs, which can make up 10 percent of the gasoline blend, also contributed to the lower prices. As of press time, 10 percent of fueling stations reported prices under $3 per gallon, compared to just 1 percent at the same time time last year, and the percentage was projected to grow larger through December. The region least likely to see these low prices will be the Eastern Seaboard — primarily the Northeast. However, the Rocky Mountains and northern Midwest expected the biggest price drops. Diesel, on the other hand was poised to move upward into the $4-per-gallon territory by the New Year, due, in part, to diesel fuel being used for heating.
