Gasoline Prices Start 2014 with Record High The national average price of gasoline started 2014 at $3.31 per gallon — the highest it has ever been at the beginning of a new calendar year. On the whole, 2013 f nished the year with an annual average of $3.49 per gal- lon, which is around 10 cents per gallon less than 2012. Similar to the past decade, prices were expected to decrease slightly in January as ref neries looked to purge inventories of winter-blend gasoline, followed by a less severe price hike in the spring than past years, which could be due to new ref neries, a boom in domestic crude oil, and cuts in demand. However, most analysts predicted that the year ahead will likely see wild volatility with sharp and quick increas- es, and rapid market corrections. Furthermore, they believe regional variances will be greater than they have ever seen. The midsection of the country is expected to see lower prices and the coasts to see more price volatility. Meantime, diesel prices were expected to increase due to the brutally cold weather in the East and utilities switching to diesel to keep up with heating demand.
